Italy-based manufacturer Magneti Marelli Holding USA on Monday opened a 100,000-square-foot plant in Independence Township.

The new plant will specialize in exhaust system manufacturing and add to the company’s products, which include automotive lighting, powertrain, electronic systems, suspension systems, aftermarket and motorsport. It employs 75 people.

Magneti Marelli’s North American headquarters is in nearby Auburn Hills, but the new plant is its first Michigan manufacturing facility.

It manufactures hot end exhaust manifold integrated with catalytic converters and will produce about 300,000 units per year, representatives say.

And the plant has already started work on its first “important project” that is “related to Fiat Chrysler platforms,” according to a statement.

Eugenio Razelli, CEO of Magneti Marelli, said his company has a footprint that reaches across the global auto market.

“The exhaust business, with a very significant presence in Europe, South America and, since few years, also in China and India, is now adding an important presence also in the US,” he said.

Magneti Marelli Aftermarket North America, which runs the “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar” All Makes Parts Program, is also housed at the Independence Township location.

The All Makes program enables Chrysler Group dealerships to service all vehicle makes and models, as well as offer product to independent repair facilities, say company representatives. The Aftermarket division employs 18 workers.
